Dr. Phillips Center Unveils Sculpture Honoring Founding Chairman James H. Pugh

The Dr. Phillips Center for the Performing Arts announced the unveiling of a new bronze relief sculpture by renowned artist Paul Day, honoring Chairman Emeritus James H. Pugh, Jr., the driving force behind the Center’s creation and success.

From 2003 to 2022, Pugh led the organization from idea to functional reality, dedicating nearly two decades as chairman. His leadership, industry expertise, and commitment were critical in translating the vision of a world-class performing arts facility into a cornerstone for the community.

Alongside his wife, Alexis, Pugh was the Center’s very first donor, making a significant contribution that named the 294-seat Alexis & Jim Pugh Theater, now a hub for regional artists and performances.

During his tenure, the Center debuted the 2,700-seat Walt Disney Theater, which raised the bar for Broadway in Orlando, and Steinmetz Hall, a flexible venue that broadened cultural access in Central Florida and was recognized by Architectural Digest as one of the world’s most beautiful theaters.

“Jim’s leadership has been essential in delivering on our commitment to ‘Arts for Every Life’ in the region,” said Kathy Ramsberger, President & CEO of Dr. Phillips Center. “His vision and generosity have influenced every stage of our organization’s growth, from design and construction to fostering a culture of excellence. This sculpture will serve as a lasting tribute to his impact.”

The new bronze relief, commissioned by long-time friend and arts center donor Neal Dempsey, was created by acclaimed artist Paul Day, known for major works in London and at Rollins College. The piece represents Pugh’s enduring influence on the arts in Central Florida and the collaborative spirit that brought the Dr. Phillips Center to fruition.

“Today, we recognized the power of vision, sustained commitment, and the remarkable results a dedicated community can achieve,” remarked Ed Timberlake, Chairman of the Dr. Phillips Center Board of Directors. “Jim demonstrated that with determination and passion, it’s possible to transform bold ideas into vital cultural institutions.”

Ticketed guests may view the sculpture on the first tier of the Della Phillips Lobby.

The project received generous funding from Jan & Neal Dempsey, with additional support from Valeria & Jim Shapiro and Bill Forness.
