Florida Grocery Shakeup: Publix is No Longer Florida’s Best Grocer, According to ACSI Study

Publix is an institution in Florida. Whether it’s nostalgic Pub Subs or that catchy-as-hell slogan, “Where Shopping is a Pleasure,” Floridians love Publix.

But things are changing. According to the latest American Customer Satisfaction Index, Publix isn’t Florida’s top grocer anymore.

Each year, the American Customer Satisfaction Index surveys consumers to determine how happy they are with products and services within certain industries. This year, shoppers are a little less happy with supermarkets overall. Satisfaction with supermarkets declined 1% to an ACSI score of 78.

Higher prices due to inflation and increased competition are starting to take their toll on the industry. While most supermarkets saw their score hold steady, three chains changed positions: Trader Joe’s, Save A Lot and H-E-B.

Last year, Trader Joe’s and Publix shared the top spot with an ACSI score of 84. This year Trader Joe’s surged into first place while Publix remained the same. That’s impressive considering Trader Joe’s continues to grow its national footprint.

Typically when a retailer grows that fast, something gives. Operations become stressed and product/service consistency takes a hit. Apparently not at Trader Joe’s. Trader Joe’s has maintained its unique customer experience which has ensured repeat business from happy customers, even as they continue to open new locations. Publix will have to enjoy watching from second place for now.

Here is the full list of scores according to the latest report by the American Customer Satisfaction Index.
