The Orlando Museum of Art (OMA) is pleased to present “Relationships: A Love for Collecting II,” the next chapter in a significant multi-year gift from Dr. James Cottrell and the late Joseph Lovett.
This exhibition continues to highlight the transformative impact of their collection and the enduring partnership between these two influential art patrons.

Dr. James Cottrell, a distinguished anesthesiologist and professor, and Joseph Lovett, an award-winning documentary filmmaker, began building their art collection in 1970s Manhattan. Over four decades, their collection has grown to more than 500 pieces, representing an impressive range of painting, photography, sculpture, and printmaking.

The collection features works by notable artists such as Suzanne McClelland, Deborah Kass, Donald Baechler, and Adam Fuss.
In 2024, OMA received 314 works from the Cottrell-Lovett collection, a landmark gift marking the museum’s centennial. The initial “Relationships: A Love for Collecting” exhibition introduced the public to this remarkable collection.
“Relationships: A Love for Collecting II” now offers visitors another opportunity to experience the depth and breadth of this private collection and its impact on the museum’s holdings. Joseph Lovett passed away in July 2025, leaving behind a lasting legacy in both the art and film worlds. The continuation of the Cottrell-Lovett gift ensures that his vision and dedication to contemporary art will resonate with future generations.

Coralie Claeysen-Gleyzon, Dr. James Cottrell & Mr. Joseph Lovett Chief Curator at OMA, commented: “The Cottrell-Lovett collection stands out for both its quality and diversity, encompassing abstraction, representation, and conceptual art. We are honored to steward this important gift and to share it with the broader community. This exhibition is both a celebration of Jim and Joe’s lifelong commitment to contemporary artists and a tribute to Joe’s enduring influence.”
Previous OMA exhibitions of the Cottrell-Lovett collection include “Co-Conspirators: The Collection of James Cottrell and Joseph Lovett” (2004), “The Conversation Continues” (2016), and “Relationships: A Love for Collecting” (2025). This fourth presentation demonstrates OMA’s ongoing mission to foster creativity, passion, and intellectual engagement through meaningful connections with art.
“Relationships: A Love for Collecting II” will be on display from September 24, 2025, through March 15, 2026.
